Thanks to computers, TV, and the internet, audiences have short attention spans and are easily bored by straight lecture. The successful public speaker knows communication is a two-way street and actively engages the audience using a variety of techniques.
No speaker succeeds by boring the audience. And one of the most boring things to your audience is monotony; more and more of the same thing. You have of course heard the saying about variety being the spice of life. Well, variety can also help spice up your talk and keep monotony at bay. The longer the talk, the more critical variety becomes. You can get away with lecturing non-stop for a 20-minute luncheon talk, but it’s boring for a full hour, and for a full day, absolutely deadly.
The most effective way to add variety to a lecture is audience involvement and interactivity. When the audience is actively involved in the presentation, it increases their interest and attention. They participate more, learn more, retain what they have learned better (because the event is more memorable), and give higher ratings both to the instructor and the presentation (evaluation forms often ask attendees to rate the instructor, the presentation, and sometimes the audiovisual and the handouts separately).
Internet marketer and speaker Joel Christopher calls his weekend workshops “Funshops.” I like that title, because it correctly acknowledges that, in addition to learning, the attendees want to have fun. When people come to hear you speak, they just don’t want a dry lecture or recitation of facts.
